135 miles 130 Degrees 60 Hours

Este agosto, una pandilla de amiguetes se embarcaron en una de mis aventuras favoritas, que es visitar la parte que pueden de los USA en un coche de alquiler. Ye les referencié mientras me daban envidia con su viaje en algún post. No podían irse sin mi recomendación de viajar por el Death Valley National Park, y a fé que lo hicieron.

Una de sus "hazañas" fue marcarse un sprint en la zona de Badwaters. Hoy, en uno de mis paseos por la red, he visto que esa hazaña no es nada extraña por la zona, y de hecho, hay una carrera anual que hace algo parecido: La Badwater Ultramarathon.





Lo he descubierto a partir de un post de uno que me iba cayendo simpático mientras leía que, en plena crisis existencial, unos cuantos tragos de tequila le marcaron un punto de inflexión. Y se vio metido de golpe y porrazo en una vorágine que le llevó a meterse en estas carreras.

Puede repasarse en profundidad y con tranquilidad. Yo solo os incluyo la introducción (in English) como una posible actividad a visitar (no pienso recomendar correrla) en el mes de Julio si os perdeis por ahí...

AdventureCORPS, an event production firm specializing in ultra-endurance and extreme sports events, will host the 30th Anniversary Kiehl's Badwater Ultramarathon on July 23-25, 2007. A true "challenge of the champions," this legendary foot race pits approximately up to 90 of the world’s toughest athletes – runners, triathletes, adventure racers, and mountaineers – against one another and the elements. Covering 135 miles (217km) non-stop from Death Valley to Mt. Whitney, CA in temperatures up to 130F (55C), it is the most demanding and extreme running race offered anywhere on the planet.

The start line is at Badwater, Death Valley, which marks the lowest elevation in the Western Hemisphere at 280’ (85m) below sea level. The race finishes at the Mt. Whitney Portals at 8360' (2533m). The Badwater course covers three mountain ranges for a total of 13,000’ (3962m) of cumulative vertical ascent and 4,700’ (1433m) of cumulative descent. The Portals are the trailhead to the Mt. Whitney summit, the highest point in the contiguous United States.

Held as a race since 1987, this great tradition began with Al Arnold's solo trek from Badwater to Mt. Whitney in 1977, Jay Birmingham's record-breaking run in 1981, followed by scores of solo efforts, and then the Badwater 135 races from 1987 through 1999. AdventureCORPS has continued that tradition by producing the Badwater Ultramarathon since 1999.
